Ruginoasa Pit
Ruginoasa Pit is located in the southeastern part of Bihor county, in the Bihor Mountains, on the administrative territory of the Nucet city. It is a monument of nature and a protected area of national interest (since 2000), being included by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in category III-a, dedicated to natural geological reserves. At the same time, the monument is included in the avifaunistic special protection area of the Apuseni-Vlădeasa Mountains and in the Apuseni Natural Park.
The monument is a ravine of about 600 meters in diameter, 100 meters deep and an area of more than 20 hectares, located at about 1400 meters altitude. It was formed by the torrential action of the water, which determined the erosion of the layers of red clay, quartzite and freestone, thus creating one of the most spectacular geological phenomena in Romania. The steep walls and sharp edges converge towards the center of the pit, where the Valea Seacă gorge looms. Ruginoasa Pit, with its impressive dimensions, geological composition and way of formation, represents a unique area in Bihor County, which is of great interest to tourists.
