Darvas-La Roche House
Casa Darvas-La Roche is an architectural monument of great historical and cultural importance for the Oradea Municipality, representing a testament to the life of the small and middle bourgeoisie at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Constructed in two distinct phases, 1909-1910 (the main facade) and 1911-1912 (the secondary facade), the house stands out as one of the most spectacular buildings belonging to the Jewish cultural heritage built in the Art Nouveau style in Oradea. It is located in the city center, on Iosif Vulcan Street, on the right bank of the Crișul Repede River. The monument is easily recognizable due to its facade, decorated with numerous Viennese motifs, as well as simplified geometric forms, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic elements. The house was built according to the plans of architects László Vágó and József Vágó and, due to its artistic value, is considered one of the most original constructions of the early 20th century. After extensive renovation works in 2020, Casa Darvas – La Roche opened its doors as the first Art Nouveau museum in Romania, and it is also one of the few of its kind in Eastern Europe. It includes numerous art exhibitions, jewelry, clothing, furniture, and other objects that depict the lifestyle in Oradea during the “La Belle Époque” period.
